The official name of the garden is: Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) Botanical Garden. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam was the first president of independent Mauritius. He was not the founder of the garden though. The garden was built in 1729 by a frenchman who called it Mon Plaisir (My joy). It was the first botanical garden of the southern hemisphere. In 1770 Frenchman Pierre Poivre planted trees and plant coming from all over the world. The garden has gone through good and tough times. It was even used as a nursery during the malaria epidemic of 1866.
